Milk for Schools

Fonterra Milk for Schools aims to give all New Zealand primary-aged children the opportunity to enjoy the goodness of dairy every school day by offering free milk in schools.

Fonterra announced a Milk for Kiwis plan late in 2011. The plan included the introduction of Fonterra Milk for Schools, offering all New Zealand primary-aged children access to the benefits of dairy nutrition every
school day.

In 2012 Fonterra piloted the programme in the Northland region, with all Northland schools with children in Years 1 through to 6 invited to participate. This pilot has enabled Fonterra to work with schools to test and refine programme logistics such as product delivery, installing refrigerators and the recycling processes.

An independent evaluation of the pilot was conducted by the University of Auckland. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in children’s milk consumption following the adoption of the Fonterra Milk for Schools programme, both at school and at home. The evaluation showed a 28 per cent increase in the number of students who reported drinking milk five or more days a week.

There are now over 1,000 primary schools participating in this programme and the feedback has been very positive from teachers, children and their parents.
